Driving to visit family includes varied terrain. Along the way, there is a fair amount of open space that’s cattle range. When I’m traveling alone, I’m often inspired to sing songs like “America the Beautiful.”
In southern Idaho, I noticed vultures circling not far from where other cattle were grazing. I recognize they’re not the most attractive birds; however, they are of great value as scavengers, especially in hot regions because of the way they’ve been created. It’s interesting to know that vulture stomach acid is exceptionally corrosive allowing them to digest foods that might be lethal to other scavengers. Thus, by devouring the remains of expired animals, vultures remove potentially lethal bacteria from the environment.
As I thought about the role of vultures in the circle of life, I reflected on how I fit in. As Covid continues to “haunt” us, I recognize that I can either be a germ that attacks the health/immune system of others or I can act like a dose of Vitamin C & strengthen it…
Hopefully my legacy will be that I spread joy, not germs…How about you?
